Ever wonder what the Docuware Thumbnail Service does......so do we.....

Trays moving slowly? Are you having Images spin for a VERY LONG TIME in the tray after you unstaple them....

We did too.  Turned out to be the THUMBNAIL SERVICE.....

So what does the Thumbnail service do?  It creates the thumbnails before you need them.....unless you want them right this second....in that case you have to WAIT for the service to create them....

REALLY!

We loaded up a 50 page document into a tray and unstapled the images.....after lots of spinning it averaged about 3 seconds per image to get them on screen.

We TURNED OFF the THUMBNAIL service using control panel\administrator\services and did the same test and the image display was INSTANT.....it was so fast we could not believe it.

The point is that the thumbnail service BURNS time to create an image you may never see again....so if your retrievals are to 10% of your documents on average then you are wasting 90% of the CPU time you use creating unneeded thumbnails.

When asked about the thumbnail extractor and the load it places on the server a user got this response from Docuware.....

"I am pretty sure that that is the Thumbnail extractor. This would run if you have configured a workflow to create Thumbnails.

Frankly, I would disable that workflow as personally I think the Thumbnails are of limited benefit - that is I've not seen any performance gains by having Thumbnails of documents pre-created. In fact, all you are doing is loading up the server unneccessarily."

I agree with the tech team and am recommending that you TURN OFF or even TAKE OFF  THUMBNAIL SERVICE IT IS NOT NEEDED....

Test it for yourself.
